WP u13 Girls:
Just a reminder that we will continue with our sessions every Saturday (come rain or shine) 12-1:30pm at Reddam until our trials on the 15th October. The cost is R100 per month – thank-you to those of you who have already paid.
Our squad has grown to 40 girls and we are getting a nice selection from all different schools. Our sessions are open to all U13 girls, of all levels and we urge as many girls to come join us/ give water polo a try. Our aim is to expose as many junior school girls to water polo as possible, in order to grow the sport in the Western Cape.

WELCOME BACK .... School starts next week and its great to hear that many of our teams are already busy with training ahead of the new season.

2011 will be a busy season for Western Province Schools Polo and will culminate with the annual SA Schools Tournament being held here in the Mother City (Cape Town) in December. Before that we have lots of other exciting games, tournaments , tours and other events... so watch this space!!

Fixtures have been finalised for the term and these will be posted to this site shortly and don't forget to diarise the "knock out" finals (Sometimes refereed to us Mazinter or Waller Cup) which will be held at Newlands Pool on the 17th of March.Watch this space for further details in due course.

We wish all teams, players, coaches, refs and administrators a fantastic season and one where all your hard work is well rewarded... its going to be fun!

DISAPOINTING OVERALL RESULTS FOR TEAM WP

Not with standing the fact that the girls teams won 4 out of the 5 gold medals on offer, over all results for Team WP were disappointing.

Congratulations to the girls U19A, 15A, 14A and U13A on winning GOLD. Special mention must be made of the very mature display put on by the U19A girls in the final when they reversed an earlier loss to Gauteng U19A to take the gold medal in extra time.

WPSWP continues to dominate the tournament in the girls section but the results in the boys sections can only be described as very disappointing. Teams that had set themselves up for certain gold failed at the knockout stages either in the semi or finals.

A letter from Sam ( Manager of all the ladies teams )

Dear Players and Parents,

Brace yourselves for a fairly lengthy email, but there are quite a few things to clear up before we all depart to Durban on Friday, 10 December J

1) The flight

Departure time is 11.30 on Kulula. You need to be there 2 hrs before this departure time at 09.30. Don’t forget to wear your WP Golf shirts
(white with blue), shorts, slip slops or tackies ( if cold, fleece too). At the airport you are to meet with your coach first and as a team you will meet Norma Schooling at the check in desk for Kulula. Please don’t forget to bring certified copies of your ID or birth certificate, you will not be allowed to board the airplane without proof of identification. All players who have decided not to return with the team on Tuesday, 14 December need to let Norma Schooling know (nschool@mweb.co.za) by the end of today, so that you will not forfeit your return flight fee.

2) Meals

On arrival in Durban on the 10^th December, you will not be provided with lunch so please make sure you have enough money on you to buy something to nibble on. Every other day you will be givenR50 to buy something to eat for lunch during the course of the tournament. Breakfast and dinner will be provided for according to a meal schedule at the hotel.

3) Kit

As has been mentioned in previous e-mails, no player is allowed to wear any clothing with branding or alternative sponsorship on it, other than BOE/Stag. BOE/Stag are the official WP waterpolo sponsors and therefore only kit with their branding/logo may be worn during the course of the tournament. This means that no tournament T-shirts are allowed to be worn during the course of our participation in the tournament.

4) Accommodation

By now a list of with whom you would like to share a room should have been given to your coach to forward on to Norma Schooling. Boys and Girls will be separated and placed on different floors of the hotel. There is to be absolutely no fraternization with any members of the boys’ teams in rooms. You are however, welcome to hold a conversation with them in the reception or restaurant area of the hotel. If anyone is caught with a boy in their room, a disciplinary meeting will be held and the player may be sent home on the next flight to Cape Town. Any damage to hotel property will be expected to be paid for by the player and their family.

5) Initiation

In light of what has just been said above, no team may engage in any form of initiation that involves alcohol, cutting of hair or the writing on bodies etc. Players found guilty of such an offence shall be immediately suspended and they shall face a disciplinary hearing and may be sent home. My suggestion to the captains of each team, is speak to your coach before you land yourselves in a big hot mess!

6) Spectator/Player Behavior

This applies to both the players in the tournament and the parents who plan to watch them: All spectators and players are to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner. Should any spectator be found to bring the tournament into disrepute, they shall be asked to leave the premises and shall be banned from attending any further matches; or in the case of a player, they shall be red-cardedand face disciplinary action.

7) Medical Issues and Hospitalization

There will be two cars made available to coaches and managers to transport any learners who may be injured or fall sick during the course of the tournament. All medical aid details provided by you already, will be kept on hand by the coaches in the event any one needs to be taken to hospital. Norma Schooling will also have a fully-stocked first-aid kit on her person at all times, should players need help with strapping and any bumps or bruises. Please ensure that you pack any vital medication and the sharing of asthma pumps is not recommended. As some of the pools may use a chlorine base, I also recommend that you buy some industrial-type eye-drops, especially for those of you who have hyper-sensitive eyes.

8) The order of events on arrival, 10^th December

Team registration will take place at Kings Park from 2pm-7.30pm . During this time their will be team photographs. All players need to ensure that they are dressed in the same BOE/Stage uniform (collared shirts, shorts and slip-slops). Team matches will commence on the Saturday and the team finals will take place at 3pm on Tuesday, followed by prize-giving. On the morning of the 14 December, all players need to pack up their belongings and be ready to vacate their rooms on immediate return to the hotel after the closing ceremony.

The Refs Whistle: Playing advantage!

When should a ref allow advantage ? A real dilemma!

Spectators are often upset because (In their opinion) the Ref allowed play to carry on despite a clear foul, or in other instances blew for the foul despite the fact that the attacking player might have scored if advantage was allowed and the ref had allowed play to continue.

There is no right answer ........ just look at the scenario set out below and understand how this is a real dilemma for all refs.

1. A right-handed center establishes position and gets an entry pass from O4 good enough to allow a strong-side turn. The defender is vertical and on the center’s right shoulder. Oh oh… The defender grabs and pulls back, separating the center from the ball. “Ah Ha, a pull-back, I’d better call an exclusion or they will think I am blind” thinks the referee, and does so. What would have happened if the whistle had not been blown? Maybe the center could have fought through the pull-back, reached the ball, picked it up and shot. If no whistle had been blown and this had happened, the referee can walk back to the center of the pool brimming with self-righteousness. But what if the center missed? Then what? Was waiting on the whistle the correct decision? There is no way to know, for that moment anyway. But we can be confident that the next time that situation occurs, the defender will remember that no whistle was blown and will be emboldened to foul even harder. So, no whistle in the first case escalates the physicality in the second case. Hmmm… this is not so simple, is it?

Remember ..... Once advantage has been allowed, its over,and unlike many other sports (Rugby) the Ref cannot stop the game and bring the ball back to where the original foul was committed.

The only thing both players and spectators can hope for is consistency and a ref who does not want to be the star of the show.We have many very good refs who strive for exactly that and they deserve our support and appreciation and not our ridicule when they get it wrong.

"The Refs Whistle !" Please leave the Pool Enclosure -

That's right! The Ref can ask (order) you to leave the pool enclosure (Red card).

Sometimes spectators cross that thin grey line which defines simple and enthusiastic (maybe even vociferous) support and down right abuse of the ref and/or other officials.

And yes!, when this happens the Ref can stop the game, call for the ball and then walk over to you and request (direct) that you immediately leave the pool enclosure for the remainder of the game.

A simple guideline ... if your shout is directed at the Ref for something he missed or did not do, then it will normally mean it has crossed the line, but if you shout is aimed at your son or daughter (or their team) then it should be okay.

So who decides if you have crossed the line ? Simple answer .... The Ref !, and once so directed, you have no choice but to do as told and leave ...... (by this time everyone watching the game including your hugely embarrassed son or daughter are also focused on you).

We at Western Province Schools Water Polo do not want to discourage our travelling supporters from providing loud and enthusiastic support, but at the same time we ask that you remember that the ref is nearly always better placed than you are to "call" the game and in most cases even knows the rules better than you do.

By all means cheer and encourage your team, but please, no matter how frustrated you are, don't direct your jeers and comments at the ref. If you do, then don't be surprised if he hauls out the red card and asks you to leave!

Shouts of " Ball under !, Foul ! and even He's gotta go !! " are normally happily tolerated by the ref (who in all likelihood is concentrating so hard that he has not even heard you !) but "Wake up ref ! and Hey Ref... you are a joke! (or worse) are simply unacceptable and will have consequences.

We look forward to lots of enthusiastic and positive support in Durban !! Go Province !

(By the way , if in your angry state you decide to argue with the ref or refuse to leave he can simply call the game and award it to the other team).

"Refs Whistle" Focus on spectator ( Parent?) behaviour

The SA Schools tournament is just a few weeks away and we thought it important to focus a little on spectator (Parent?) behaviour , not only in the lead up time to the tournament but also on the pool deck and in the stands.

Lets start with an extract from a website www.positivecoach.com dealing with a parents relationship and partnership with the Coach

Guidelines for a Coach/Parent Partnership

Research is clear that when parents and teachers work together a child tends to do better in

school. There is no reason to think that it is any different in youth sports. The following are some

guidelines for how parents can contribute to a Coach/Parent Partnership that can help the athlete

have the best possible experience.

1) Recognize the Commitment the Coach Has Made: For whatever reason, you have chosen not

to help coach the team. The coach has made a commitment that involves many, many hours of

preparation beyond the hours spent at practices and games. He has earned the right to make

decisions (including playing time) with his commitment. Recognize his commitment and the fact

that he is not doing it because of the pay! Try to remember this whenever something goes awry

during the season.

2) Make Early, Positive Contact with the Coach: As soon as you know who your child’s coach is going

to be, contact her to introduce yourself, and let her know you want to help your child have the best

experience she can have this season. To the extent that you can do so, ask if there is any way you

can help. By getting to know the coach early and establishing a positive relationship, it will be much

easier to talk with her later if a problem arises.

3) Let the Coach coach: You are not one of the coaches, so avoid giving your child instructions during

the game. It can be confusing for a child to hear someone other than the coach yelling out instructions

during a game. As in #4 below, if you have an idea for a tactic, go to the coach and offer it to

him. Then let him decide whether he is going to use it or not. If he decides not to use it, let it be.

Getting to decide those things is one of the privileges he has earned by making the commitment

to coach.

The best way you can help your child is to be a “Second-Goal Parent,” so focus on helping your

child learn life lessons and let the Coach coach.

4) Fill the Coach’s Emotional Tank: When the coach is doing something you like, let him know about

it. Coaching is a difficult job, and most coaches only hear from parents when they want to complain

about something. This will help fill the coach’s Emotional Tank and contribute to his doing a better

job. It also makes it easier to raise problems later when you have shown support for the good

things he is doing. And just about every coach does a lot of things well. Take the time to look

for them.

5) Don’t Put the Player in the Middle: Imagine a situation around the dinner table, in which a child’s

parents complain in front of her about how poorly her math teacher is teaching fractions. How

would this impact this student’s motivation to work hard to learn fractions? How would it affect her

love of mathematics?

While this may seem far fetched, when we move away from school to youth sports, it is all too

common for parents to share their disapproval of a coach with their children. This puts a young

athlete in a bind. Divided loyalties do not make it easy for a child to do her best. Conversely, when

parents support a coach, it is that much easier for the child to put her wholehearted effort into

learning to play well.

If you think your child’s coach is not handling a situation well, do not tell that to the player. Rather,

seek a meeting with the coach in which you can talk with her about it.

6) Observe “Cooling Off” Period: Wait to talk to the coach about something you are upset about

for at least 24 hours after a game. Emotions, both yours and the coach’s, are often so high after a

contest that it’s much more productive if you discipline yourself to wait until a day goes by before

contacting the coach about a problem. This will also give you time to think about what your goals

Note: there are exceptions to the 24-hour cooling off period. If the coach’s behavior puts your

child’s safety at risk, appears unethical or exemplifies poor sportsmanship, by all means speak to them

right away but keep a cool head and retain your own dignity.

Penalty Fouls !! ( some times called "a 5 Metre" )

Again we venture into a part of the rule book which causes much confusion and anguish for players and spectators !

There are a number of clear cut reasons for the awarding of a 5 Metre penalty amongst others for example "incorrect entry" and also in certain instances of Brutality but those are pretty straight forward and not normally controversial. However when a penalty is awarded for a defensive foul inside the 5 m line there is always some debate !

Firstly ... the rule simply states that when a defensive player commits a foul inside that 5 m area and this foul prevents a probable goal the ref must award a 5 m penalty throw. The problem is of course here with the interpretation of the words " probable goal" , meaning the ref has to apply his discretion as to whether a goal would have been scored or not and this will always lead to some controversy.

I asked one of our leading refs in the Province for a few thoughts around this rule and here is his contribution:

"Penalty if the attacker has only the goalie to beat at that stage. The Hungarians/East Europeans believe that in an "one on one" with the keeper , the attacker should score every time. I assume this is why counter attack exercises are called "1 on 0" and "2 on 1" despite the keeper being there. So it is as if the goal is empty and a goal would be scored if the attacker wasn’t fouled or a foul took place that prevented the attacker from scoring e.g. ball under by keeper. It also depends on the angle the driver is swimming at. I won’t give a penalty to a player who is driving parallel to the goals, but I have seen refs give it. In my mind they are not actually attacking the goals so don’t deserve anything, but that is one of my quirks.

I also have a pet hate which is players who work for the penalty instead of trying to score the goal. If they stop working for the goal, I give nothing. Too many players get to the 5m and then stop when they could quite easily of carried on playing and are then indignant that they didn’t get a penalty. The penalty should be awarded as a consequence of the attacker trying to score a goal and being fouled by a defender to prevent them doing so. Spectators want to see action goals, not penalties. Players must be rewarded for positive action, not acting. Work to score the goal and in so doing, draw the exclusion or penalty, not working for an exclusion or penalty."

Hope this makes it a lot easier to understand ....... Remember the Ref is not trying to be controversial ... in fact he is probably trying to be exactly the opposite and as fair as possible to all including the player and team who have worked so hard to get into a scoring situation.

"Exclusion Fouls"

Today we discuss a section of the rules which seems to cause many a player and spectator so much confusion (and anguish !). Kick-outs !!

Generally speaking an Exclusion Foul (or Kick-out) is called for in more serious violations of the rules such as Holding, Sinking or Pulling back a player who is not holding the ball. Perhaps understandably these happen most often in the action and fury right in front of the goal mouth when the defending team is most vulnerable and probably desperate to defend its goal!!

Once excluded , the player must leave the playing area as quickly as possible (making sure he does not impede or interfere with play in the process) and return to his team corner. Once excluded the player (or his substitute) must remain in the team corner until one of the following things happen 1) A goal is scored, 2) His team regains possession of the ball or 3) 20 seconds of playing time has elapsed.(The table keeps time and will flag the player back into the playing area)

Exclusion Fouls are deemed " personal fouls" and that is why you will always see the ref signalling with his fingers the cap no of the person who committed the foul. If a player receives 3 personal fouls against his cap number he/she will be excluded from the remainder of the game .(Again the table is responsible for keeping count and red flagging a player who gets 3 personal fouls against his name.)

This application of this exclusion rule always seems to lead to frustration .... Firstly because it allows one team a brief 20 second period to be " man up " and secondly because many a parent/player/ coach will often be convinced that the nature of the foul did not warrant the player being excluded and thus feel that the ref is unfair!!!

"All about Fouls"

This week will be dedicated to talking about Fouls and understanding a few of the basics around the various types of fouls that occur in the normal course of a game.

Okay , so believe it or not but Waterpolo is supposed to be a Non- Contact Sport! Yeah Right !!

The only time that a player from one side may touch a player from another is when one of them is holding the ball!!

The moment the player with the ball releases the ball and has no contact with it and assuming the opposition player is then still touching him at that time , then the player with control of the ball will win a free throw and depending where and how this contact takes place in the pool , it will be deemed either a major or a minor foul.

There are basically three types of fouls - 1) Ordinary Fouls, 2) Exclusion Fouls and 3) Penalty Fouls.

An Ordinary Foul is awarded to the player and team in possesion when an opposition player violates a minor rule.

Resulting in a quick free throw and virtually no stop in the run of play . Even the player who has won the free throw does not have to stop and can continue swimming or completing the action he was busy with immediately prior to the free throw being awarded.

He may however not shoot at goal himself before the ball has been passed to another team member or touched by another player in the pool. ( We will discuss the one exception to this rule later in this series on Fouls).

There's a feast of schools water polo coming up

The Gauteng waterpolo teams to compete in the SA Schools championships in Durban in December were announced this week. We aren't running the names of those selected today because it's become a nightmare for the secretary of the local schools association to collate the names and send them through.

The reason is that Gauteng will be sending no fewer than 14 teams - seven boys and seven girls - to the four day event. That makes it by far the biggest single delegation to represent the province in a schools sporting code at provincial level.

I remember a time when the SA Schools water polo tournament was for boys only, and featured two sections - under-19A and B and U-16 boys.

The sport, I'm told, is now the fastest growing code among schoolgirls and there are as many girls teams as there are boys at schools each year. I went along to the the tournament when it was held in Joburg last year and remember feeling a little disapproving of the notion that the exclusivity and elite nature of years gone by had been eliminated.

I said so to Doug Schooling, the chairman of the Western Province Schools Association, who told me to keep my bad mouth off their wonderful tournament. One year on, and after all the further mouthing off I've been doing in this column about the educational value of sport at school, I have to say he was right.

What could be better than having close to 200 boys and girls spending a week of their December holidays in the sunshine, in fierce competition, under strict supervision, at a superbly run sporting tournament?

And that's the crux. Water polo, like its foundation sport, swimming, requires a commitment to training that few other codes can match. At most schools the polo players also swim for the school, so it's quite common for them to spend up to three hours in the water, five days a week, between the two sports.

I was discussing this with a colleague last week and he wondered how good his son, a schools provincial cricketer, would be if he spent that amount of time in the nets each week.

And it's fun. Why else has the sport become so popular among the girls? The swimming coaches often have to lay down the law to prevent their stars from defecting to the ball game.

And they do. Ask yourself: Why spend hour after hour looking at the black line on the bottom of the swimming pool when you could lift your head up and throw a ball around with your mates instead?

And Gauteng has become a major force at this level. The boys won the U-19 section last year, and they won the U-16 girls and U-14 boys. They were in the final of just about all the other sections too.

And of course, all those hours of practice, and the selection and coaching of all those teams is only possible because there are dedicated teachers around the country making it happen.
They've already been at the poolside just about every day since October, and their working year only ends when they get back from Durban one week before Christmas.

So you, like me, will have to accept that we'll have to hold the publishing of the Gauteng teams until next week.

Who said Refs were not human ?

We need to correct two small mistakes that crept into the bit about "timeouts" !!

Firstly .. a timeout is not 2 minutes but 1 ...... Confusion arose because of a rules "interpretation clause" that directed referees to ensure that the game should start promptly and immediately after a time out period has been concluded.Here it was suggested that 2 minutes was appropriate.

But now you know ... 1 minute is the official time allowed for a timeout period.Not much time if you think that the players need to gather together in their own half, receive instructions from the coach and then re enter and get into position !

Secondly ... Only the team in possession may call a timeout. In a 5 m penalty situation only the team awarded the penalty has possession and can thus call the timeout.

After the penalty has been taken and assuming a goal has been scored then the other team would be allowed to call a timeout , however if the ball rebounds back into play and the attacking team retains possession then normal timeout rules apply.

Proving that refs can also get it wrong from time to time !!!

Substitution of Players during the game :

A coach may substitute any player in the pool and while general play is in progress at any time as long as exit and entry is done correctly.

Re-entry by the new player takes place from in the pool and in front of the team corner and only after the substituted player has also returned to the corner . (If the pool has double lane ropes with red markings then both players must be in between the ropes and within the red markings before the new player may swim in to join play ).

Sometimes players get so caught up in the game and are so keen to get going that they lose focus and jump/dive directly into the pool playing area while play is in progress and automatically give away a 5 m penalty foul.(ouch !!!)

However , between chukkas, during a timeout or after a goal has been scored you will often see the coach making a number of changes with players diving in from all over the place and likewise players exiting the pool from just about anywhere in the pool and this is perfectly within the rules.

If the coach substitutes a player with an illegal player (a player who for some reason has been excluded from the rest of the match) then this will also result in a 5m penalty foul. Strange as this may sound it happens quite frequently when the coach forgets that a player has already got 3 personal fouls against him or her and is thus illegally brought back into the pool through an attempted substitution.

Time out:

Did you know that only the team that is in possession of the ball ( while in play) may call a timeout ? However after a goal has been scored or before a penalty throw, either team may call a timeout.

Each team is permitted to call 2 timeouts during the 4 periods of regulation play (and one extra during extra time) . A timeout lasts 2 minutes.

Calling a timeout ( by the coach) when his team does not have possession will result in an automatic 5 M penalty foul against his team.

Timeouts are typically used for tactical reasons by coaches who want to call a specific set play and or to move players into position (up the pool) before commencing with play.

Durban : December 2010: Where to stay ?

The majority of games are being played at Kings Park and Clifton Pools and as such we thought it a good idea to suggest a few places to stay that are near to these pools.

The Morningside/ Florida road / Berea area has a number of well known hotels and boutique Guest Houses/ B&B's.

Starting with " Quarters " and "The Benjamin" both which are in fact on Florida Road and very convenient to both pools as well as to a range of good restaurants in their immediate vicinity.Then the very quaint and perhaps a little quirky " La Bordello" ( 031- 3091001) is just at the bottom of Windermere Road and close to everything- well priced at about R350-R400 per person sharing.

A little higher on the hill and at most 7-10 minutes from Kings Park and a lot closer to Clifton you will find a range of very comfortable and well priced Guesthouses and B &B's.

To name a few: "St Annes Guest House" ( 031 2075924 ), "Goble Palms Guest House" ( 031-3122598), "Essenwood House" ( 031-2074547), "Browns Guest House" ( 031-2087630) and "Acorn B &B" ( 0312081884).

If you want to be a bit closer to Northwood then perhaps Forest Manor in La Lucia ( 031-5725400) is for you , however it can be termed pricey at R900 pp sharing.

There are quite a few good options out Umhlanga way ( close to the team hotel) and here Manaar House ( 031 5617902 ) and Tesorino B&B ( 031 5612719) come to mind but also not forgetting "FiveBurnham Guest House" (031-5723019) midway between La Lucia and Umhlanga.

Of course Durban also has its fair share of City Lodges, Holiday Inn's and Hilton Hotels if that is your preference !

"Running time v Stop Start"-- Normally games are played with the so called "stop - start" clock operating but at some tournaments games are played with a running clock-- meaning that the actual chukka time is 8 minutes (for instance) and that the clock does not stop on each blow of the refs whistle.

Normal league or pool games at tournaments do not allow for extra time but in "knock out" tournaments or where elimination of a team is needed ( Quarter and Semi Finals ) then FINA rules allow for the determination of a winner through "Extra Time" and if necessary then a " "Penalty Shootout".

"Extra Time" is played in the event of a tie at the end of normal time and will normally commence after an initial break of 5 min . FINA stipulates 2 periods of 3 minutes with the sides changing sides after the first extra period. ( A 2 minute break between these two 3 extra chukkas as well).

The "Penalty Shootout" is stipulated in the case where a winner is needed and here each side must nominate 5 players who will take their shots in strict rotation. If after each side has taken their 5 shots there is still no clear winner then the shoot out will continue but this time the first team to lead by a single goal will be declared the winner ( I.E. Sudden death).

This is the second of our series on water polo rules through which we hope to not only enhance your knowledge of the game but also enjoyment as a spectator.

This week we will chat about the length of a game and also a few of the issues that could arise from this.

The official FINA rules allow for four Chukkas of 8 minutes each with the First and Third breaks being 2 minutes and the second break 5 minutes and the sides changing end here as well.

Most polo games are played with a "Stop - Start" clock in operation meaning that the clock only runs down when the ball is in play and will stop on each blow of the whistle .... thus although the chukka is only 8 minutes long the time to complete this could be considerably longer . Timekeeping is the job of an official at the table who sits with a " switchbox" in his hand and he will stop and restart the game in line with the refs whistle and the ball being put back into play after a stoppage .

Remember that these times could differ a bit in Durban with the younger teams in all probability playing shorter games. We hope to confirm these game times to you in due course so watch this space.

South African Under 18 Waterpolo Tri-Nations Tour

The South African Under 18 Boys and Girls teams were given the best possible experience this past weekend when they played in the Senior Old Eds Club tournament in Johannesburg. Playing against many Senior National players, as well as the current Under 20 squads, was just the warm-up these two teams needed as they prepare for the Tri-Nations tournament in Auckland, New Zealand in December.

The Boys team had an exceptionally good tournament, making it all the way to the Quarter Finals, and ending up 5th out of the 16 participating teams. The Girls also had some very close matches, with two incredibly close losses, which could have gone either way.

Meanwhile, the itinerary for the tour is becoming clearer, with the Under 18's staying on in Durban after the SA Schools tournament, prior to departure for Auckland, via Singapore. An official kit presentation will take place in Durban and the team will fly out on the 15th December, returning on the 24th.

All matches will be played in the impressive Millenium Pool on Auckland's North Shore, with three trophies being competed for: The Tri-Nations Trophy (two matches each against NZ and Australia); an all-comers trophy (including matches against a New Zealand Invitational team) and a trophy to be played for over three matches between NZ and South Africa.

More details may be found in a short while on www.waterpolo.org.nz, along with continuous coverage during the tounament.

We wish the Western Province players in the national Under 18 teams all the best as they prepare to take on their Kiwi and Australian counterparts.

RULES RULES RULES!!!............. Did you know?

The SA Schools National Waterpolo Tournament is now just a few weeks away, (11 December – 14 December 2010 – Durban) and to help both players and parents enjoy the occasion that much more, we will over the next few weeks, publish a few of the FINA Waterpolo Rules which will apply at the tournament. Please note that there will also be “ “Tournament specific “ rules which could be different from the FINA rules and we will also where possible highlight these.

Lets start with the playing fields (Size and markings):

Men: 30 x 20 Metres. (That’s 30 m long and 20 m wide)

Women: 25 x 20 Metres

- White marks = goal line and half distance line.

Red Marks = 2 m line (important when we discuss corner throws and the offside’s rule).

- Yellow marks = 5 m line. (Watch out for this in our discussion about shots at Goal after a foul and penalties).

The tournament which is being held during the first week December involve over a thousand school boys and girls, managers and coaches, from around the country. The players, boys and girls in age groups ranging from under 13 to under 19, will test their skills against one another in an initial round robin format, culminating in a final playoff to determine the winner in each age group.

WPSWP will announce their 16 teams to take part in the SA Schools National Water Polo Tournament to be held in Durban in December on Wednesday 13th October at Rondebosch Boys High School.

The Capping Ceremony will commence at 17h30 in the RBHS school hall. Guests will include representitives of official sponsors, Stag Property Developers and BoE Private Clients as well as Springbok Assistant Coach, Gary Gold who will present the Team of the Year awards for both boys and girls.

A lucky draw comprising of a return air ticket to Durban as well as a full WPSWP kit hamper will also be done.

All players are requested to be at RBHS at 17h30. Parents are requested to arrive early as seating is limmites. A cash bar will be available in the crieket pavilion immediatly after the presentation and announcements.

GREY JUNIOR WIN SACS UNDER 13 TOURNAMENT

Grey Junior played to their strengths superbly to beat Reddam under 13 4 - 1 in the final of the Sacs water polo festival held this past weekend at the Sacs Aquatic Centre.

Reddam won the award for the team scoring the most goals during the pool stages of the tournament. The team scored an astonishing 95 goals for and 1 against during their 9 pool matches.

Luke Schooling was awarded with the trophy for the most goals scored by an individual, 25 in total.

ST ANDREWS WIN SACS WATER POLO TOURNAMENT

St Andrews College were rewarded for 4 years of hard work and dedication with the gold medal at the Sacs Water Polo Tournament held this past weekend. The St Andrews team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and edged Pretoria Boys High School for the gold medal in a thrilling final 5 - 3.

Bishops were the best placed Cape side losing to St Andrews 1 - 5 in the semi final. RBHS lost 1 - 5 to St Andrews in the quarter finals and Paul Roos lost to PBHS 1 - 8 also in the quarter finals.

Chris Day from Bishops was the only WPSWP player selected for the tournament team.

The tournament, now in it's 26th year, was a fantastic success.

WBHS under 15A team beat Grey PE 6 - 4 in the final of the annual Sterrenberg Shield Tournament. The tournament, hosted by Selborne College, took place last week Thursday and Friday in East London and by all accounts was a huge success.

The WBHS under 15B team won the B section. Defending champions, Reddam College ended in joint 3rd position with Kearsney College from Durban.

“The purpose of the event is three-fold,” says Doug Schooling, Chairman of the Western Province Schools Water Polo Association. “To raise funds for the annual SA Schools National Water Polo tournament, to provide a fun and entertaining evening for the water polo community and to have people walk away with something special from the auction or lucky draw.”

The four day National tournament will be held at various venues around Durban during December and attended by 1500 competitors from all over South Africa. “Our teams win a minimum of 50% of the gold medals at every Nationals tournament,” says Schooling proudly.

Cape Town will host the Nationals tournament in 2011 after their successful hosting of the event in 2007. “The fundraising event next week will be a precursor to a number of events we will be holding to raise funds for the 2011 tournament. Sponsors like idu Software make it possible for us at WPSWP to grow and develop water polo in schools, which is our ultimate goal.”

Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist will be performing at Wynberg Boys High School on Tuesday 21 September at 19h00. All proceeds from the evening will be used towards player costs for the National tournament later this year. The goal is to raise between R80 000 and R100 000 to cover flights, accommodation, transport, meals and tournament levies.
The event will comprise two 45 minute sessions with Andre, with a 20 minute interval during which there will be an auction and a lucky draw. Items that will be auctioned include two Springbok Rugby jerseys signed by the current Springbok squad, two rugby balls autographed by the Western Province squad; a mountain bike, gift hampers and several weekend getaways.

Tickets are selling fast, with 50% of the 800 available tickets sold in the first week. Tickets cost R80 each and can be purchased from schools, at squad training and at the door; although it is recommended that people purchase in advance.

TEMPE, Ariz. - A pair of Arizona State University water polo players received All-American honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC), it was announced this month. Junior attacker's Sarah Harris and Lynlee Smith were both named Honorable Mention.

Harris, in her first season with the Sun Devils, collected a pair of goals at the MPSF Championships April 30-May 2, and finished the year with 38 goals, which ranks third on the team. She tied for the top spot on the team with 30 steals, ended second on the squad in points with 52 and recorded 14 assists. A former standout at Pacific, she also won 82 of 98 sprints this season. After seven MPSF matches this season, Harris was the team leader in goals (13) and points (15), and was second in steals (eight) in conference play. A consistent starter, she was third on the team with 10 multiple goal games this season, including four games in which she scored three or more goals. Harris was awarded MPSF Mikasa Newcomer of the Week honors by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation April 3 following a five-goal performance against No. 3 California.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WITH WPSWP

There appears to be some confusion, lack of understanding and clarity with regards winter squad training, team selections, trials and the general role played by the WESTERN PROVINCE SCHOOLS WATER POLO ASSOCIATION in schools water polo in the Western Cape. As such we thought it pertinent to answer some questions being raised around the pool deck and at the same time dispel some unnecessary rumors doing the rounds.

Q:- Who is WPSWPA and what does this body do?
A:- WPSWPA is a body which administers schools water polo on behalf of all affiliated schools in the Western Province. All affiliated schools elect a committee at an annual general meeting held in March each year. The committee is made up of a chairman, vice chairman, secretary, treasurer, development manager, technical manager and in the case of the current committee an additional member that has been co opted onto the committee to look after our Boland Schools interest. The committee meets once a quarter and chairs the various meetings involving representatives from all the schools which deal with matters relating to fixtures, referees etc.

Q:- Who is responsible for the selection of the various Provincial coaches?
A:- A special selection team under the leadership of Ian Melliar, together with Chris Jones (Sacs), Gary Enderly (RBHS) and Mark Evans (Reddam). This team receives applications and CV's from interested coaches at the beginning of the year. They then put forward their recommendations to the committee who then ratifies their recommendations. WPSWP are extremely fortunate to have very well qualified coaches at their disposal. Most coaches are usually given a two year term with a particular team depending on results, availability etc.

Q:- How do the various winter (Aug/Sept) squads work and who is invited to them?
A:-Players from all schools are welcome to join a winter squad. The winter squad training usually commences at the beginning of August and ends with the trials which are held during the first weekend of the 4th term. (this year 9th and 10th October). The cost per player is R100.00 per month (August & September) and this is paid directly to the coaching staff. As stated all players are invited to these squads, however attending these squads does not mean automatic selection to a Western Province team. At the same time a players inability to attend these squads due to winter sports or academic reasons will not be overlooked for possible selection.

Q:- Where and when are these squads sessions held?
A:- At a number of schools who kindly make their heated pool facilities available. Because of the winter sports programme most if not all the sessions take place on a Sunday so that as many players as possible can attend. Not all schools with heated pool facilities are available on a Sunday due to school policy and consideration for neighbors etc which results in most of the sessions taking place at Reddam and WBHS.

Q:- What is the difference between these winter squads and private sessions?
A:- The winter squads provide the coaching staff to have a look at a large number of players. They also provide the players with an opportunity to work with the coach and players from other schools. Private sessions are not too dissimilar to extra maths lessons. The players involved want to improve their game and as such pay for additional one on one professional coaching sessions. The number of players making use of private sessions has grown dramatically this year.

Q:- How do the trials work and who selects the various teams?
A:- As stated previously WPSWP hold their trails during the first weekend of the 4th term. In the past all players have been allowed to attend the trials. This has not been successful due to the number of players involved ie far too many players do not get adequate time to impress the selectors due to the limited time available resulting in disappointment and concern as to the fairness of the trails. This year only invited players will be allowed to attend the trials. What this entails is that the respective school coaches will be asked to nominate players who they believe are of provincial standard. Secondly the provincial coaches will be able to nominate players that have impressed them during the winter squad training sessions. One needs to keep in mind that the coaches were appointed in April this year and know all the players reasonably well. Players invited to the trials will then play a series of matches at the trials. As with all selection the coach has a pivotal role to play, however he is not the sole selector. All coaches of a specific age group are invited to be selectors and the process is managed by a duly appointed convener of selectors who ensures that all players are given a fair shot at making the team. Once the selection panel has completed the selection process the teams are then sent to the chairman of the WPSWPA committee for ratification.

Q:- Do the players only get to impress the selectors at the trials?
A:- Definitely not. Good coaches (and all of the WPSWPA coaches are good coaches) are continually watching players during the various inter schools matches and tournaments that take place during the year. The under 19 and 13 boys are watched very closely at the Sacs Water Polo Festival and Sacs Prep Tournament respectfully. Players from schools who do not take part at these tournaments who are of a provincial standard are invited to the trials.

Q:- When are the teams announced?
A:- The team is unofficially announced immediately after the trail in most cases. However, as stated previously the official team announcement takes place at the capping ceremony which will take place on Wednesday 13th October this year.

Herewith information about the final trials to select the Boys and Girls under 18 Water polo teams, to be held this weekend (6-8 August) at the St Peter’s pool in Johannesburg. Many thanks to those parents who have offered to assist with hosting during the trials.

An equalization fund will be in place for the trials to help offset some of the travelling costs of those coming from a distance. The equalization fund will be R700-00 for all Gauteng and Northern Gauteng players. I also have some money to pay back to those who traveled to Durban for the first round of trials.

The trial times at St Peter’s are as follows. These have changed slightly as the men are no longer training at the same venue. Should there be a problem with getting to the airport for flights because of a clash with the last session, please advise me when I see you in Johannesburg. I do also know about some of the Johannesburg players who are writing Matric Prelims – we will work around these times, though obviously the more session’s players are able to attend the better.

There may be a need to tweak these times but this will be explained to all at the pool.

I shall arrange for the refund of the deposit for those who do not make the final team, and as such will distribute a form requiring banking details, in order to make the transfer as soon as possible after the trials.

I look forward to seeing the players in Johannesburg. Please feel free to contact me should you still have any queries. There are a few players for whom I STILL do not have contact details, despite several requests – please spread the word to those you know are meant to be at the trials.

UNDER 19 GIRLS SQUAD TRAINING COMMENCES THIS SATURDAY

Under 19 Girls squad training commences this Saturday at Reddam from 12h00 to 14h00 with coach Paul Martin. The cost of the training is R100 per player per month and will take place until the trials on Saturday 9th October. More information in this regard to follow.

Trials for SA U18 Waterpolo teams

In December this year, two South African Schools waterpolo teams will travel to Auckland, New Zealand, to compete in the Tri-Nations tournament against their Australian and New Zealand counterparts. A Boys and Girls team will be selected and early indications are that both should be strong teams. The Boys team will be coached by Brad Rowe and the Girls by Lee-Anne Keet, with Neil Malherbe accompanying both as Manager.

The first trials were held in Durban in June and from those a final squad was selected. Now this is to be further whittled down to the last fourteen in Johannesburg from 6-8 August. The final trials will take place at St Peter's.

The teams will leave immediately after the SA Schools tournament in Durban and will return the day before Christmas.

High drama was the order of the day last night at the annual WPSWP Knockout Championships held at the "grand old lady" Newlands with no fewer than 3 matches being decided on penalties after full time.

The drama started in match one of the day where the Sacs under 15 boys edged out the section favourites, WBHS, on penalties after the match ended on level terms after full time. More was to follow in the under 19 boys semi final where Sacs once again managed to edge out Bishops in a sudden death penalty shootout after the teams were level after the preliminary round of penalties.

If the capacity crowd thought they had seen the last of the dreaded penalty shootout they were badly mistaken! The girls under 19 final provided even more drama with Reddam scoring the equalising goal with 40 seconds of the match remaining to force Herschel, who had lead for most of the match, into the 3rd penalty shootout of the evening. After a full round of penalties the teams went head to head in a sudden death shootout, eventually won by Reddam.

The boys under 19 final was a more "relaxed affair" with RBHS defeating Sacs in a highly competitive game.

RBHS under 19A and Reddam under 19A girls find themselves in the pound seats after finishing first in the under 19 boys and girls league respectively. Rondebosch defeated Bishops on Saturday to take the number one spot while Herschel unexpectedly forfeited their match against Reddam scheduled for Saturday to give Reddam the number one spot.

The semi finals and finals take place this Thursday at Newlands and Sac with matches commencing at 14h30.

RBHS UNDER 19A DEFEAT BISHOPS TO TAKE NUMBER 1 SPOT

RBHS easily defeated Bishops in a relatively one sided affair at Rondebosch on Saturday. As such RBHS take the number one spot into the Knockout Semi Finals on Thursday at Newlands.

REDDAM PREP U13A BOYS WIN GREY JUNIOR FESTIVAL

Reddam Prep U13A boys won the Grey Junior Water Polo Festival held in PE from Thursday to Saturday. The team received a big boost on Saturday with the appearance of their past u11 coach and Reddam Prep deputy head, Mr Neil Malherbe who travelled to PE from Nelspruit especially to watch the team.

Reddam amassed an amazing 109 goals for with only 13 against in 11 matches.

Having beaten the Grey team convincingly 6 -1 in the pool matches on Friday, Reddam came up against a typically determined Grey outfit in the final managing to win 3 -1 in extra time (Final score 7 -5). Unfortunately the Grey team were reduced to 6 players for the final period of extra time due to the fact that 2 of their 8 players had 3 major fouls.

Luke Schooling was judged the Player of the Tournament but he would be the first to admit that the victory was a team effort with all 10 players contributing to the teams success.

Bishops under 19A recorded a very good win over rivals Sacs on Saturday winning 8 - 7. This result ensures that the last round of league fixtures take on an added significance for the the teams competing for a top 4 position in order to qualify for the Mazinter semifinals to take place at Newlands on Thursday 18th March.

REDDAM GILRS AND RONDERBOSCH BOYS FLY VICTORY FLAGS

The Reddam House under 19A girls team and the RBHS U15A boys team returned home victorius from the Old Petrians Open Girls Water Polo Tournament and Parktown Boys High under 15 tournaments respectively.

Reddam remained unbeaten throughout their pool matches and then defeated Claredon from East London in the semi final before beating Roedean 7 - 3 in the final.

The RBHS under 15 boys team won the final after a reasonably easy semi final against Clifton. Bishops ended 5th overall.

At the Jeppe under 14 tournament Bishops came a distant 5th after playing some really good water polo in the pool matches.

It was obvious for all to see where the strength in boys under 19 water polo is firmly entrenched at this time when Gauteng schools dominated the Kes under 19 boys tournament. St John's, St Stithians, Kes and overall winner Parktown dominated proceedings throughout.

Herzlia stun Paul Roos!

A surprise result from the boys U19 schools league last night
where Herzlia beat Paul Roos first team 14 - 12.
The game was played at the Paul Ross home pool for the first time.

This result means that Reddam will probably join Rondebosch,
Sacs and Bishops in the semi-finals of the knock out tournament
in mid March at Newlands. However they first need to defeat Wynberg
this weekend to secure 4th spot.

WP schools off to Jhb this weekend

This weekend four tournaments take place in Jhb.

The boys U14 Ken Short Speck Pump tournament at Jeppe with
Bishops being the sole WP representative school here.

The U15 Parktown Boys High Indigo tournament where WP is represented
by Bishops and Rondebosch.

The girls U19 St Peters tournament where Reddam, Springfield,
Rustenberg, Wynberg, Herschel and Westerford are all taking part.

The boys U19 Kes tournament where SACS, Paul Roos and
Rondebosch are the representative schools from WP.
